India’s silicon city, Bangalore, houses Motorola applied research lab

(ANI News) Bangalore: The global communications giant, Motorola has set up an applied research laboratory in the silicon valley, Bangalore, to facilitate their global applications programme.

Addressing the media in Bangalore on Thursday, the Motorola’s chief technology officer Padmasree Warrior told that the Motorola Labs India, which is the company’s 11th such facility worldwide, will conduct applied research in converged networks, autonomic networking, enterprise applications, embedded systems and physical sciences.

“In the laboratory we are announcing in India, is going to a central part of looking at the next generation networking application, the next generation user interface applications on content services, which are two of the most critical areas in our strategies around seamless mobility. So, it is extremely strategic operation for us,” said Warrior.

Warrior said more than Rs.3 billion have been budgeted to invest for its software and research development (R&D) in the laboratory. The laboratory will initially employ 30 researchers and advanced degree holders to explore the future communications networks.

The company’s other research laboratories are located in the US, Britain, France, China and Japan, employing about 1,000 scientists and technologists. The Chief Technology Officer said that there were also plans to introduce low-cost mobile devices and solutions in India next year and use them as a test-bed for other developing nations.

Warrior said Motorola is looking at wireless broadband both in the cellular as well as IT networking area.

“Wireless broadband is an important area for us to explore in the future. We believe that it is an important technology to go forward. We are looking at wireless broadband both in the cellular as IT networking area. Things like 3G as well as 802 XX related technology are areas that we believe important going forward,” said Warrior.

At present, about 40 percent of software products that go into the latest mobile handsets are being developed in India. (Technology News)

Now, print your meal and eat it too!:

[Technology India]: London, Feb 10: Technology seems to have inspired a chef to design an amazing invention, edible ink made of liquidised food to print a picture snack on low-cal edible paper using a specially designed printer.

According to The sun, chef Homaru Cantu's food paper can even be downloaded from the internet. He adapted an ink-jet printer with computer wizards from local firm Deep Labs.

They first experimented with ink made of crushed carrots, tomatoes and purple potatoes. He has already started printing edible menus at his restaurant Moto in Chicago.

Diners can rip up the menu and toss it in their soup or have the sheets baked or fried. "You can make an ink-jet printer do just about anything. Just imagine going through a magazine and looking at an ad for pizza. You wonder what it tastes like so you rip a page out and eat it," he added. (ANI)

Bacteria will soon move your mobiles!:

[Technology India]: London, Feb 10 : If you are fed up with carrying a bulky mobile charger everyday in your wallet, then this one is for you. A new technology will enable mobile users to get connected to the world with the help of bacteria.

According to the report published in the journal Nature, Prof Chris Pickett and his colleagues at the John Innes Centre claim that they have built the active part of a bacterial enzyme that works like a miniature hydrogen fuel cell.

The world's first efficient bacterial battery, as they say, will recharge your cell phone or any other portable electronic device within no time.

The research could help scientists to replace the expensive platinum catalysts in fuel cells that break up molecules of hydrogen gas, releasing electrons that generate an electrical current.

"In nature iron-sulphur enzymes catalyse a range of important chemical reactions that industry can only do by using precious metal catalysts and/or high temperatures and pressures," the Telegraph quoted Prof Pickett as saying.

The bacterial battery will hit the market in mid 2006 and could be used in environments where it is difficult or costly to charge the batteries. (ANI)

10 Asian countries launch biotech federation:

[Technology India]: Hyderabad, Feb 10 : Ten Asian countries Thursday joined hands to form a federation to promote biotechnology in the region.

The Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) was launched at BioAsia 2005, a three-day bio-business summit that began here Thursday.

The federation would allow regional cooperation in biotechnology and help Asian countries make advances in the sector, said Answar Nasim, head of Pakistan's National Commission on Biotechnology and founder president of FABA.

FABA's members are India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Israel, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The federation, with a secretariat here, will promote biotechnology as a science as well as business. It will help in collaboration between the academia and the industry, said officials.

"The members will learn about biotechnology from each other, which is very important for economic progress," Nasim told IANS.

He hoped FABA would bring about greater sharing of technology, joint ventures and more investment. "We can also plan a common market for this sector," he said.

Nasim hoped the federation would provide India and Pakistan another platform to strengthen ties. "Agriculture and heath are our common issues," he said.

Nasim said Iran would be a key member as there has been a lot of biotechnology work in that country including the Hepatitis vaccine.

"Saudi Arabia will also be an important member as it is developing a biotech city in Jeddah," he said.

FABA would try to rope in China into the federation, Nasim said.

M.K. Bhan, secretary of India's department of biotechnology, and B.P. Acharya, a former secretary of biotechnology in the Andhra Pradesh government, will be FABA patrons.

Soon, your PCs may sense your emotions!:

[Technology India]: Sydney, Feb 4 : Along with sharing your workload, soon your computers will also share your stress and emotions as Australian scientists are now working on developing voice recognition software capable of recognising emotions like stress, anger urgency etc, as conveyed by the user's voice.

Current speech recognition technologies can sometimes detect when human intervention is needed, but need more finesse, says Professor Robert Dale, director of Macquarie University's Centre for Language Technology.

"By monitoring aspects of the acoustic signal, a machine can make a guess at the emotional state of the caller," says Dale, who predicts this will be standard within five years. But for now, some systems rely on recognising certain key phrases to tell when customers are fed up," he was quoted by the ABC Online, as saying.

Psychologists, musicians, creative artists and linguists will join IT, science and engineering experts in a bid to unravel communication problems between humans, as well as those between humans and machines.

Scientists hope to find ways to improve the experience for those who get stuck talking to a machine. And chances are, we'll have to do more machine talk in future, as more companies look for cheap ways to handle customer calls.

"One challenge is how to get a machine to realise it has made a mistake. One thing people tend to do is speak more slowly, but this only makes the problem worse. The machines have been trained for average speaking speeds," Dale added.(ANI)

Spam set to flood your PC!:

[Technology India]: London, Feb 4: Spammers seem to have found a new way out to get around current spam-blocking defences despite efforst by anti-spam organisations.

According to The New Scientist, Steve Linford, head of the UK anti-spam organisation Spamhaus, revealed that instead of sending spam using illegitimate mail servers, they are now routing messages through valid servers via hijacked home computers.

The latest version of software used to remotely send spam from hijacked computers could undermine the effectiveness of spam blacklisting as it affects the whole mail server.

After taking over a computer, these programs send a network query to its internet service provider (ISP) to find the address of the host's mail server. It uses this address to forward junk emails.

This implies that spam cannot be blocked without restricting all email sent from an affected ISP. Linford added that ISPs can take several steps to counter the problem. They can restrict the amount of email any single user can send.

They can also use separate servers to send and collect email, which should make it more difficult for spammers to identify the one used to send emails. ISPs can also use a secure email sending technology called "SMTP AUTH" that requires each message to be accompanied by a username and password before it can be sent. (ANI)

Microsoft's search engine to battle Google:

[Technology India]: New York, Feb 2 : Microsoft has unveiled what its founder Bill Gates calls "more precise and powerful" search capabilities on msn.com.

The announcement is widely seen as Microsoft's effort to crack the near monopoly of search technology pioneer Google, which too has recently added a host of new features.

"Our goal at Microsoft is to use the power of software to solve our customers' toughest problems. Searching the Internet today is a challenge, and it is estimated that nearly half of customers' complex questions go unanswered," Gates said in an official announcement.

"That's why we're proud of our new MSN Search service, a simple and powerful tool that helps you find the answers you want from sources as diverse as Web pages, images, news headlines, music downloads and even files on your PC."

"Input from millions of our customers - including me - was crucial to our efforts to make MSN Search the best it can be. If you have not already tried it, I encourage you to visit www.msn.com and type in your question. We'd love to hear what you think, and I promise that we will continue to improve MSN based on your feedback," Gates said.

The worldwide search engine is available in 25 markets and 10 languages.

MSN Search has been displayed more prominently on the home page, with convenient tabs that allow consumers to search for news, images, music, desktop or Microsoft Encarta. The MSN Search consolidates all of Microsoft's own capabilities and network into one platform.

"We're committed to continuous improvement in the speed, precision and ease of use of our search service," Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of the MSN Information Services & Merchant Platform division at Microsoft, was quoted as saying.

Microsoft puts its digital encyclopaedia Encarta to a good use by letting searchers dig into its more than 1.5 million answers. Answers are provided in categories such as geographical locations, historical and popular figures, definitions, facts, calculations, conversions, and solutions to equations.

It also offers instant answers from MSN Music where consumers can type the name of a recording artist, song or album into MSN Search and automatically obtain links to music files and other top content provided by MSN Music. It also allows users to purchase and download music. The feature is currently available only in the US.

The company's global campaign is expected to reach 90 percent of consumers in America and several hundred million other consumers globally.

With this news service Microsoft hopes to grab a major share of the search engine market, which has turned into one of the most attractive companies. Although Google enjoys the pioneer's advantage, Microsoft is likely to use its financial and network muscle to power into this rapidly growing multi-billion dollar market.

E-governance in rough waters in HP:

[Technology India]: Nadaun (himachal Pradesh), Jan.31 : The implementation of e- governance began three years ago in Himachal Pradesh amidst much fanfare, but now this program has run into rough waters with residents complaining of a lack of coordination.

Started in 2001 with 25 kiosks for the redressal of grievances of general public from different government departments, the government's e-governance initiative has not been able to meet its key goal of providing employment to the youth of the state.

Officials, however, say the main purpose of the project was to provide better administration to the people of the state.

"The initial purpose when this project was launched was to provide a responsive administration for the people of the district and people could physically visit the government office, they could transmit, send their complaint to the various government departments by the use of email," said Dereesh Kumar, deputy commissioner of Hamirpur.

According to state government figures in 2003, only 30 complaints were solved through the project out of 450 registered on the government website. Last year, the figures were much lower.

Residents complain of lack of coordination among the government officials for the failure of the project.

"We come to the centre in the morning and go back in the evening. In the last six months we have not been able to contact them either through e-mails or servers," said Rajeshwar Parmar, a kiosk owner.

The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) had carried a detailed study in 10 key Indian states to analyse the implementation of e-governance. The study had stressed that the government should focus on bringing efficiency in governance through better use of technology.

According to NASSCOM, the e-Governance market is witnessing year- on-year growth and was estimated to be 14 billion rupees in the year 2003-04. (ANI)
