Tori Amos releases new album
The Tori Amos album The Beekeper is the US singer's ninth, and her first since 2002.
The singer songwriter, famous for creating meaningful, emotional songs that incorporate acoustic guitar, piano, and strings into elaborate and evocative compositions, says her latest nineteen-track collection, produced by Amos at her studio in Cornwall, in the rural west of England, was inspired by the events of the last two years in her home country, pointing to power, faith and manipulation.
The single Sleeps With Butterflies is one of the more uplifting tracks on an album that warns of a coming storm.
The daughter of a Methodist minster, Amos remains a Christian, and is angry about what she sees as the hijack and manipulation of her religion by politicians.
"In America, Christianity has become a very powerful and strong ideology, not necessarily Gnosticism - Jesus' teachings - but they've been kind of turned and twisted in order to control the masses and women are very nervous in the States about, you know, certain civil liberties, being, we're worried about them being changed and there's a control from the patriarchy - there's a puritanical need here to control.
However, the singer describes the album as a multifaceted series of parables dealing with themes as disparate as the balance between male and female, mortality and attaining wholeness without referring to power structures.
Having risen to international fame with her breakthrough 1992 album Little Earthquakes, Amos continued to build up a fanbase for her piano ballad style through albums including Under the Pink, Boys for Pele and Scarlet's Walk.
The singer is currently on tour in the US. Australian dates in May have recently been announced, ahead of European dates in June. (AP)
MJ trial: Accuser's mother admits lying under oath
Pop Star Michael Jackson returned again to court, after a weekend break in his child molestation trial.
The trial into charges of molestation against Michael Jackson left off with his defence attorney making an attack on the credibility of his accuser's mother.
The boy's mother spent much of her time on the witness stand bickering with the pop star's lead attorney, where she claimed that Neverland was a den of "booze, pornography and sex with boys."
Jackson's lawyer appeared to score points for his defence when the woman acknowledged lying under oath during a 1990s civil lawsuit she filed against a retail store.
She claimed to have been sexually assaulted by security guards, and the department store settled the case for over $150 thousand.
Jackson has been charged with giving the woman's son alcohol in order to molest him.
The performer, who has pleaded innocent, faces more than 20 years in prison if convicted. (AP)
Elvis impersonators flock to London
Elvis impersonators of all ages flocked to London on Sunday in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most Elvis fans singing in one venue.
The event held at the Selfridges department store, was staged as a commemoration ahead of what would have been Elvis' 70th birthday.
"We are going to try and make the world record of number of Elvises singing Viva Las Vegas at the same time. We are going to aim for 100 Elvises. And to have it done in London, I think it's great because these things are always kept to the States," said Elvis impersonator 'Elvis Shmelvis' as he awaited to enter the competition.
'The King'
Known as 'The King', Rock 'n' Roll legend Elvis Presley, was born in Mississipi in 1935 and is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture.
During his lifetime, Elvis sold over 300 million albums and made 33 films. Elvis also gave 837 live appearances in Las Vegas over 20 years.
However, the star's career ended prematurely when he was found dead at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.
The singer, who also holds his own World Record, was labelled the biggest selling recording artist ever.
BMG record label announced in 1992 that Elvis had sold more than 1 billion records and CDs worldwide since 1954.
A total of 77 Elvis impersonators turned out for the event and sung Viva Las Vegas for over three minutes, enough to establish a new Guinness World Record, testament that 'The King' was still alive. (AP)

50 Cent's success harks back to Beatles
(upi News) NEW YORK : U.S. rapper 50 Cent has become the first performer to place at least four songs in the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 since the Beatles in 1964.
Forty years ago, Britain's Fab Four had the top four singles in a row -- "Can't Buy Me Love," "Twist and Shout," "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand," plus "Please Please Me" in fifth place, the New York Daily News said Thursday.
This week's chart features four songs featuring 50 Cent, "Candy Shop" at No. 1, "Hate it or Love it" at No. 3, "Disco Inferno" at No. 6 and "How We Do" in ninth place. In three of the four, 50 Cent is guesting or using a guest artist.
"It's always dangerous to compare anything to the Beatles, since they hold such a singular place in music history," Billbooard chart editor Geoff Mayfield said. "And besides, on their five Top 10 songs, it was all them -- it wasn't like Petula Clark was guesting." (Entertainment World)
